Is the choice of title critical for manuscript acceptance?

olbannerleftIn the journal Evolution and Ecology (advanced publication), Charles Fox and Sean Burns look at how titles for manuscripts submitted to Functional Biology have evolved over the last 10 years and whether title structure affected acceptance rates (The relationship between manuscript title structure and success: editorial decisions and citation performance for an ecological journal). They also looked at 25 years of publications in Functional Biology to assess whether titles influenced the citation impacts of the related articles. In short, although titles have evolved, there has been little impact on rates of acceptance and publication. One element was significant however: titles more broad in nature were more successful (impact/citation) than papers having a specific species in the title.
